Problems with water quality while traveling
Drinking water does not necessarily mean germ-free water. Despite very high quality standards, even in Germany 100 CFU per 100ml drinking water are allowed. By storing the water in the fresh water tank, hoses and boilers (stagnant water) and through influences such as bioavailable nutrients and heat, bacteria & germs can multiply rapidly.
Ailing lines at water filling stations on the campsite and inadequate water treatment standards (especially in southern Europe or outside Europe), represent a big problem. This is confirmed by the fact that up to 80% of travel diseases are caused by the use of contaminated water.
Drinking water – our most precious ressource
In the area of drinking water hygiene in the caravan, motorhome or boat, the range of treatment and cleaning products is very large, and it’s not easy to get an overview at first. But which products are really necessary, and how often should they be used so that my water, the tank, the pipes and the water heater will remain clean and hygienically safe?

WM aquatec recommends:
- Annually: cleaning, descaling and disinfection of the tank and the entire freshwater system
suitable products: Hygiene-Trio, DEXDA® CLEAN, KXpress - Conservation of water in central and northern europe
suitable products: Hygiene-Trio, SilverPad, SilverNet, DEXDA® COMPLETE - Additional disinfection of the water outside of central and northern europe
suitable products: DEXDA® COMPLETE, FIE-100 Filling & Inline Filter
Example of fresh water system installation

Water pump
Especially when using filters (after the pump), the capacity is crucial for convenient use, particularly in the “characteristic curve” of the pump. We are happy to advise you.
Fresh water tank
Microorganisms propagate rapidly as a result of water being stored in the fresh water tank (stagnated water) and factors such as bioavailable nutrients and heat. Regular cleaning / disinfection of the entire fresh water system, preservation of water in Central and Northern Europe and additional disinfection of water outside of Central and Northern Europe is therefore recommended.
Silvernet / Silverpad
The Silvernet and Silverpad ensure that fresh water is automatically preserved every time you refill your water tank. Pure silver ions provide effective protection against contamination for water and the fresh water system. The products are suitable for various container and tank sizes and only need to be replaced once a year.

Drinking water disinfection – 100% chemical-free! The FIE-100 filling & inline filter offers a compact, sterile filtration, which removes virtually 100% of purely physical pathogens, such as bacteria, fungi, etc., guaranteeing perfectly hygienic water. It can be used to fill fresh water tanks or fitted upstream of a valve.

Showers are constantly in contact with the standing water in the pipes. The stagnation of shower water (standing water) can lead to an increase in microorganisms and therefore also pathogens. There is the risk that the connected drinking water will be contaminated back in the pipelines, which is known as retrograde contamination. For this reason, regular cleaning / disinfection of the entire fresh water system (including the shower head) and conditioning (preservation / disinfection) of the water is advisable.
Washbasins
Cold water pipe
Microorganisms and bacterial, such as pseudomonas, staphylococcus and E. coli propagate more rapidly when temperatures increase. Bacteria propagates from a temperature of approx. 10 °C and at 25 °C, the growth rate has already trebled. Regular cleaning / disinfection of the entire fresh water system, preservation of water in Central and Northern Europe and additional disinfection of water outside of Central and Northern Europe is therefore recommended.
Boilers
In most cases, boilers in recreational vehicles are operated at temperatures of around 55°C. In terms of energy consumption, this is considered practical. But in terms of hygiene and microbiology, it can have a negative impact. According to a new study by the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI) in Braunschweig, contaminants such as legionella propagate predominantly at temperatures between 50 and 60°C. For this reason, regular cleaning / disinfection of the entire fresh water system (including the boiler) and conditioning (preservation / disinfection) of the water is advisable here.
FK1 combi-filter
The FK1 combi-filter is a combination of terminal, sterile filtration and a preliminary filtration carried out by means of an activated carbon block. It guarantees the removal of unwanted suspended particles and bacteria as the reduction of excess chlorine, harmful substances such as pesticides and heavy metals, ensuring perfectly hygienic water.

The water in hot water pipes is subject to temperatures of about 55°C. For this reason, regular cleaning / disinfection of the entire fresh water system and conditioning (preservation / disinfection) of the water is wise.
